Sport Science Students Learn from Industry Practitioners

This week Chris Armstrong, head of sport science at Warwickshire County Cricket Club came in to present to students on our BSc Applied Sport Science and BSc Sport Coaching degrees. The students are undertaking the Sport Science Support unit in their third year and are starting to work with external clients so Chris gave them a wonderful insight into working in the elite sporting environment. In the video clip below, Chris goes on to give any potential students coming onto either the Applied Sport Science or Sport Coaching degree some advice on what they should be doing when they are here. Sport Science Support: Guest lecture by Dr Jamie Pringle from the English Institute of Sport.

As part of the guest lecture series Dr Jamie Pringle from the English Institute of Sport come down to visit us today to talk to our third year HESS students studying on the Sport Science Support Unit. Dr Pringle is one of the physiologists responsible for organising and undertaking the support for a selection of the athletes that went to Beijing in 2008 and also athletes who are anticipating to compete at the 2012 Olympic games. Dr Pringle spent time talking about his role and in particular the concept of precision, prioritisation and parallel thinking when dealing with athletes and sport science support. He went on to discuss how the students must build their CV and how this is perceived as the most important factor when working in elite sport (something we stress to our students on a weekly basis and provide opportunities for their CV building which is our unique selling point as a course). Dr Pringle finished his session with a Q&A session with the students offering a variety of questions about the many aspects of his role as well as employment advice.
