| Matt Johnson offers psychological advice to the young athletes |
This week, 25 members of the Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme attended a ‘Preparing for Competition’ workshop at Southampton Solent University. The session, which was run by lecturers Matt Johnson and Emma Patel, focused on how nutrition and psychology can aid performance. This was the second in a series of workshops hosted by Southampton Solent University to help Hampshire’s athletes benefit from their sports science expertise and facilities.
Athletes were split into 2 groups based on their age and then attended 2 workshops, one on nutrition and the other on psychology. The workshops were a combination of lectures and group work which were particularly enjoyed by the athletes. The nutrition workshop challenged many of the teenage audience to consider their dietary choices. One parent fed back that this advice was taken onboard and his son who is a ‘devotee of Coco-Pops even switched to porridge the following morning!’
