Females from local colleges visit Solent University

Getting hands on in one of the taster sessions.

Females from four local further education colleges visited Solent University's Health, Exercise and Sport Science department recently as part of their drive to encourage more women into sport and exercise science.  Senior Lecturer Dr Marie Stopforth said "There is a distinct lack of females working in this industry.  When looking at the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science website, it appears that only 34% of accredited sport scientists are women.  This is reflected in our courses where there is a lack of females both amongst the student population and the staff!".  The girls from Totton, Basingstoke, Southdowns and Peter Symonds colleges had a short talk on what it is like to study Sport and Exercise Science at University, and then enjoyed taster sessions in the labs including sessions on psychology, nutrition and fitness.  This is the second day of its kind to take place, and it is hoped that recruitment of female students onto these courses will increase in the future.
